Many of these techniques can certainly be applied using Keynote. If you know anyone at Apple, tell them about my book and let them know I'd be glad to talk to them about it! |

Reader Garr Reynolds in Japan brought to my attention that Keynote does allow you to work with your slides in way that's similar to PowerPoint's "Notes Page" view - he sent a screen capture below. If you're using the BBP approach with Keynote, I'd love to see what you're up to! I'll be glad to offer whatever help I can to help to adapt the approach to the Keynote platform. Attached Images:

Reply with quote | #3 | Hi Cliff I recently bought your book because I intended to do a presentation in Apple Keynote. I came up with a presentation that was IMHO well received by the audience. So, first: It is actually possible to use the BBP workflow in Apple Keynote as well, with the exception being only the fact that one can't customise the Notes Master as proposed by the book. Thus, one can not add a corporate logo to the Notes View printout. (This can, IMHO, be circumvented by using paper with a preprinted logo on it or something similar.) Anyway, while creating the presentation, I stumbled across an interesting question I'd like to ask you. There exists a wide variety of "Themes" for Keynote that differ from PowerPoint Templates in the way that they are explicitly made to support rich visuals (Photographs etc) to create presentations. For my presentation I used a Theme called "OM" from KeynotePro (http://keynotepro.com/themes/OM.html). If you have a look at their demo Video, you can see that there's always plenty of masters w/ headlines and room for visual. My final presentation had visuals that supported my headlines in a great way and still had the sophistication of the chosen theme. Now, I wonder what you think about using such "rich" themes for BBP? Do you see a contradiction to the research of Richard E. Mayer or not? Do you know of other people that blend visuals w/ such themes? I'd very much appreciate your feedback here. Thanks and best regards from Switzerland Johann |

Hi Johann, I'm glad to hear that BBP works in Keynote. I think the book is really about clearly structuring ideas in a hierarchy and storyboard sequence, and once that is established, you can use a wide range of tools and media to present the verbal and visual information. The Keynote Pro site looks very interesting - thanks for pointing it out. From what I can see in the Deconstructing Sonoma description, the theme offers a couple of great features: a grid structure that supports a variety of layouts, a consistent color palette and a coherent look/feel. To your question, Dr. Mayer's research-based coherence principle says that people learn better when extraneous material is excluded rather than included. So the question boils down to whether any and every element on a slide is extraneous or not; and if it is, remove it. In the BBP approach, each headline clearly states the idea of each slide, so the headline becomes the criteria for determing whether something is extraneous. In other words, "Does any and every element of this slide help to explain this headline?" So in the Sonoma theme, I think the solid-color background does not call attention to itself, so it doesn't need to be removed. However, any photograph you choose should explain the headline, otherwise it should not be used. Some of the Sonoma examples could work - for example, the four vertical photos in Slide 4 could explain the headline: "Support the four-phase plan to clean the environment", if each of the photos represented one phase of the plan, and each photo was later used to introduce each of the four phases. I'd love to see some of your slides if you'd like to post them, or if you have any other great resources, please let us know! |
